Deusi programme in full swing

The much awaited Basibiyalo Deusi programme commenced from the Lakshmi puja at Topkhana, Kalimpong followed by the similar events at Sashtri Nagar, Siliguri, Teesta Highway, Algarah Bazaar, Pedong Bazaar. Due to tremendous response being received from the local people of Kalimpong, the programme is scheduled to be held on 23rd November at Damber Chowk, Kalimpong to culminate the same as a manner of grand finale. All culture lovers and Deusi lovers are invited to witness this historical event (Deusi at Main Road) from 5 PM.

The Deusi troupe was consisting of move than 50 members and led by BR Chhetri, Ex-Principal, Govt Teachers Training Institute and the whole programme was arranged by Arun Kumar Rasaily, President, Kalimpong Press Club. Senior poet Moti Prasad Sharma led the main Deusi which was followed by chorus of other members. The members included Dr. Harka B Chhetri (MLA), Sanumati Rai (83 year old literary figure), Poets like Jit Maskey, TN Subedi. A fantastic melodrama from evergreen mini epic Muna Madan was acted by Leela Joshi (Senior Teacher of Jubilee High school) and Sibu Chhetri 'Sibu', a young writer. The programme was conducted by popular announcers Lawang Tamang and news reader of Kalimpong Television Lalita P Tamang. A three member violin group recited old Nepali songs which forced the audience to cross the barricade and dance in the stage. Security measures were maintained by Gyan Bd Chhetri, ex-Serviceman. Two young chaps from Shantiniketan, Kolkata Nishant Singh and Alok Chhetri (both M. Music) were the centers of attraction as they played classical instruments Pakhawaj and Israj. Young girls Soujanya Chhetri, Sushila Jogi and Archana Chhetri turned the event in new mode when they danced in the Sangini and other modern forms. The young boys were also presented their dance item with full enthusiasm. Similarly, Naresh Bhandari, driver by profession, danced in the song Jhimkaundai Pareli which compelled all to laugh. TN Subedi and BR Chhetri also recited short poems relevant to modern days' social situation.

Most of the people enjoyed and offered their Dachchchina collectively in a traditional manner very generously. Local schools SUMI, Saptashri Gyanpeeti, Vrindavan School and Rockvale Academy came forward to provide transport facilities by offering their school buses. A medical team led by Maya Rai (wife of late Dr. Sashi Bhusan Rai) of Yelung Diagnostic and Polyclinic also helped the deusi team members wholeheartedly as they felt uneasy and ill while travelling more than 3 hours in a day. Sanju Gazmer worked hard to construct a model Gorkha hut and decorate the stage consisting backdrop and flex. Suman Gurung of Suman Sound Service was the backbone of the event while Narendra Tamang and his crew members were the vital parts to shoot all the event. All the members had put on traditional Gorkha dress including children. The programme started with the reading of code of conduct of the Basibiyalo and Jaagran geet (Sabai Nai Jagaun Sabailai Jagaun). The vocal portions were covered by Bhanu Chhetri and Nirmala Pradhan assisted by Madana Ojha, Meera Chhetri etc.

The whole event was conceptualised by Hira Chhetri.

गत शनिबारका दिन कालेबुंग को महकुमा पुस्तकालयमा मासिक साहित्यिक विचार गोष्ठी लीला जोशी अनि अरुण प्रधानको घरपतित्वमा सफलतापूर्वक सम्पन्न भयो। दक्षिण सिक्किमबाट आएका साहित्यकार एल बी बस्नेत जोर्थान्गेको विशेष उपस्थिति रहेको उक्त कार्यक्रममा स्थानीय लगायत अन्य बिचार प्रेमीहरुले स्वरचित रचनाहरु पाठ गरे भने युवा साहित्यिक हीरा छेत्रीले नेपाली अनि हिन्दी साहित्यमा स्वर्गीय गोपाल सिंह नेपालीको योगदानको चर्चा चलाएर कतिपय नया बिषयको उठान गरे। कर्मक्रममा आगामी बसिबियालो मदना ओझा अनि राधिका काफ्लेको आयोजनामा सम्पन्न हुने जानकारी गराइयो। सो दिनको बसिबियालोमा  बरिष्ठ साहित्यकार बी के शिलाल , समशेर अलि, ज्ञान सुतार, सनुमति राई , बी आर राई चामलिंग, अरुण कुमार रसाइली, सुदेश खाती, स्यांग देन  आदि उपस्थित थिए। 

DEUSI MEETING HELD

In presence of Musician Madhusudan Lama a meeting of Basibiyalo Deusi was held on 20th Oct at the office of Charitra Prakashan, Thana Dara, Kalimpong. Leela Joshi, Madana Ojha, Meera Chhetri, Radhika Kafley, Pabitra Karki, Badri Sharma, Arun Kr Rasaily, Sibu Chhetri, Leela Pd Sharma, Mani Kr Rasaily, T.N. Subdei, Hira Chhetri etc attended and shared their opinions.

It was decided to play deusi from the day of Lakhmi puja for four-five days in Siliguri, Kalimpong, Gangtok and Teesta. The guest artistes will be invited who include Debashis Mothey, Alok Chhetri, Nishant Singh (Shanti Niketan, Kolkata), Prajwal Chhetri (Rageshri Kala Niketan), four violinists from Gandhi Ashram under the guidance of Rudra Singh, Chief Instructor, troupe of Daju-Baini Kala Kendra, Salugara. The male lead voices will be Ajay Thapa, Bhanu Thapa, Rajen Chhetri, Sanju Singh etc while Amir Sundas of Bakhrakot will play Murchunga, a traditional musical instrument. Chandrakala Rai, P.C. Pradhan, Nirmala Pradhan will assist the musical troupe while Sibu Chhetri will look after the printing work for invitation card, Identity card, flex, handouts etc. Bhawani Sharma, a well known poet will also be invited to join the Deusi mainly for leading purpose. Moti Prasad Sharma will lead the traditional deusi which will be followed by chanting 'Deusi rey' by more than 40-50 followers. A melodrama will also be staged by Leela Joshi on Muna Madan. 

The programme includes recitation of code of conduct of Basibiyalo, chanding of Deusi/Bhailo, singing of jaagran geet, dance on Basibiyalo song, dance, recitation of jaagran poems, instrumentals, talent shows and aashirvaad etc.

Dr. H.B. Chhetri, MLA/Kalimpong will play guitar and sing song as special guest while Anmol Prasad, Senior Advocate, Dr R.P. Dhakal, Principal, Kalimpong College, B.R. Chhetri, Ex-Principal, BT College, Kalimpong, Amar Rasaily, Film Director will guide the troupe as advisers.

BASIBIYALO TO CELEBRATE DEUSI WITH LITERARY ASCENT

To make the cultural festival of Deusi a memorable landmark in the history of literature of Indian Nepali language, Basibiyalo group of Kalimpong has decided to observe this eve in grand manner this year. So far two meetings have been held at the office of Charitra Prakashan, Thana Dara at the initiative of Hira Chhetri and in presence of Dr. H.B. Chhetri, who is a best Sitar player, Moti Prasad Sharma, known as only Aashu Kavi of Indian Nepali language and other regular members of the platform Basibiyalo.

So far the plant is like this :

About 40-50 participants including male and female will be there to play Deusi with full traditional Gorkha costumes.

The programmes will be organised at one location in one place in an open field.

There will be a huge backdrop of Flex with full cultural ethos titled Basibiyalo Deusi in the background of the stage.

Other flex and banners depicting Basibiyalo Vichar will be put in and around the programme venue.

Folding/automatic stage will be used to accommodate all the artistes.

About 3-4 Jeeps will be used for transportation of electronic/light items with musical instruments.

Artistes so far proposed are : Madhusudan Lama, Dr. H.B. Chhetri, Hemant (who plays flute with his nose), Alok Chhetri, Nishant Singh, Devashish Mothey (all from Shanti Niketan returned M. Music), Mahendra Bagdas (comedy actor), Ajay Thapa (Nazrul singer of Duars), Aamir Sundas (Murchunga player), Bhanu Thapa (Fold Singer), Rajen Chhetri of Teesta (Singer/guitarist), Anmol Prasad (Guest Artist), Dr. R.P. Dhakal (Principal, Kpg College) etc. Apart from this, we are trying to invite Rajdeep Rai (Bhajan singer contesting in India got talent of Colors Channel). The Daju Baini Kala Kendra of Siliguri will also perform in the programme.

So far it has been decided to organise this mega event in Siliguri, Gangtok, Kalimpong and Teesta Bazaar.

There will be traditional deusi at the first part (Jhilimili in new style) and Aashirbaad in last part. It will be followed by Achar Samnita Path by the Basibiyalo members. Then the aims and objectives of the programme will be highlighted. This will be followed by group song Sabai Nai Jaagaun Sabailai Jagaun which is a Gorkha Jagaran Geet, folk songs, dances, jaatiya jaagaran kavita, group recitation of famous poems.

Invitation cards will be distributed among all the gentlemen of the locality irrespective of their caste, creed, colour, faith, religion, principle, political identity, community.

Leaflets will be distributed on behalf of the Deusi troupe to invite the general public in the programme.

One or two convenor (s) will be nominated for respective place of Deusi programme to arrange for logistic support.

All participants will be issued Identity Card to avoid influx of unauthorised elements.

The programme will be recorded in the video camera for future reference and display in local channels afterwards.

So far the organisations or likeminded groups and well wishers come forward to join hands are : Charitra Prakashan (Publication House of Kalimpong), Headline SMS (mobile news service), Yelung Diagnostic Centre (Pathological centre in Kalimpong), Bhadra Ko Toli (fourth theater group).

Media Partners are : Purvanchal Bharati (Weekly newspaper) for Print and Kalimpong Television (KTv) for electronic media.

A press conference will be held to highlight its characteristics in official manner immediately after the Dashain festival.

The individual invitee will offer Daan in collective manner. The Daan collected by the programme will be utilized for a charity purpose which will be announced soon.

कालेबुंगको महाकुमा पुस्ताकलायमा बाल बगैचा सामयिक पत्रिकाको बिमोचन 6 अक्तोबरको दिन सम्पन्न भयो। नेपाली साहित्यमा अवहेलनाको शिकार बनेको बाल-साहित्य विधामा आफ्नो अंतिम सास रहून्जेल कलम चलाउने अथक साहित्यकार स्व खिरोदा खडका संस्थापक संपादक रहेको सामयिक बाल-पत्रिका बाल बगैचा -को बाह्रौ अंक गांतोकबाट आएका बाल साहित्यकार एवं बाल दर्पण पत्रिकाका सम्पादक भीम प्रधान मुख्य अतिथिको बाहुली बाट गरियो।यस औसरमा अन्य अतिथिहरू थिए सानुमती राई , बी आर छेत्री, समशेर अली, ज्ञान सुतार आदि।

स्वर्गीय खिरोदा खड्काले आफ्नो जीवनकालमा सुरु गरेको नेपाली बाल पत्रिका बाल बगैचाको नया अंक आगामी मई महीनामा प्रकाशित हुने जानकारी दिंदै सम्पादिका स्वस्तिका छेत्रीले जानकारी दिएकी छिन. उनले यो जानकारी दिंदै विशेष गरि विभिन्न स्कूलका शिक्षक-शिक्षिकाहरूलाई आग्रह गर्दै विद्यार्थीहरूलाई उक्त पत्रिकामा सिर्जनात्मक रचनाहरू लेख्ने अभ्यास गरिदिने अरुरोध गरेकिछिन्. सो पत्रिकामा रचना आगामी ३० अप्रेलभित्र निम्नलिखित ठेगानामा पठाइदिने उनले निवेदन गरेकी छिन्. ठेगाना - मार्फत् चरित्र प्रकाशन, कोदाक बिल्डिंग, थाना दारा, कालिम्पोंग. रचनासित  सुहाउँदो फोटो अनि लेखकको फोटो पनि हुन जरुरी छ.

KAMAL REGMI BAGS FIRST YUWA PURASKAR

Kamal Regmi

Kamal Regmi, a well known poet and lyricist has won the prestigious Sahitya Academy Yuwa Puraskar for the year 2011 for his book titled Sirjana Ra Abhistha. Regmi has expressed in an interview that the conferment of this award has bestowed him the responsibility to write more and more with full sincerity. A young writer Regmi was born in Rongo, a far flung region of Kalimpong sub-division. He will be visiting the national capital of New Delhi very shortly to attend an official function to receive the award.
It may be recalled that Regmi has been the first to win this prestigious award as the same was introduced only last year.
Similar award for translation has been bagged by Dr. Khemraj Nepal for his translation work from Sanskrit language to Nepali.
Both the writers will be receiving an amount of Rs. 50 thousand each and citation as a mark of honour by the academy in a function to be attended by various young and senior authors of India during the month of August.

Basibiyalo – A Short Introduction; Basibiyalo Shatakiya Prakaran - Ek Unmukta Wichar

Namaste.

Before we begin the day’s function, it is imperative to enlighten our distinguished guests present here with the concept and history behind Basibiyalo.

Basibiyalo, meaning ‘pastime’, is a get-together of literature and language enthusiasts that is organized on every second Saturday of a month. It was actually started as a platform where people could share creative ideas pertaining to any field without any inhibition or apprehension.

 One unique feature of Basibiyalo is that it does not require any president or secretary or any of the formalities that are characteristic of official meetings. It is an informal event where members are encouraged to give vent to their feelings about issues that they feel are important to our society. There is also no definite quorum for these gatherings and it has been, therefore, suitably described as a ‘forum without quorum’.

Here, in the platform of Basibiyalo, one can share those views and opinions which he is not free to express in the society due to several factors. In Basibiyalo you do not need to recite poems only but you may criticize the prevailing system with open mind. You do not need permission to laugh or leave the hall.

Basibiyalo was, in fact, started at Gangtok in the early 90s of the last century when most of the peace-loving creative writers of Kalimpong had sought refuge in Sikkim to escape from the violence unleashed during the Gorkhaland aandolan spearheaded by the Gorkha National Liberation Front here. One of such figures was C. K. Shrestha, a well-known theatre personality, who initiated the idea of organizing a monthly gathering of aandolan victims where they would talk about home and other issues.

He was later joined by Dr. Rajendra Bhandari, Madhusudan Lama, Mandip Lama, Shyam Pradhan, N. B. Tiwari, and later by Sanu Lama, Sanubhai Sharma, Pemba Tamang, Samiran Chhetri ‘Priyadarshi’, Pushpa Sharma, Shanti Chhetri, Bijay Bantawa, Kalusingh Ranapaheli, Subash Dipak, Late Kamala Aansu, Late Purna Rai, Late Radha Krishna Sharma, Late Bali Subba Basanta, to name a few.

Most of these monthly gatherings were held at the MLA hostel located at Tibet Road. The then Ministers and MLAs also used to visit these venues to relax from their daily grind of public service.

The monthly meetings were discontinued after over 40 episodes as peace was restored in the Darjeeling hills, which was followed by the departure of Shrestha and others from Gangtok. However, the impact had already been made. In fact, the concept of forming the then national-level organization Bharatiya Nepali Rashtriya Parishad was reportedly conceived during the gathering of Basibiyalo. Later, this organization had played a vital role to include the Nepali language in the VIIIth Schedule of the Indian Constitutiion in 1992.

Basibiyalo has now shifted to Kalimpong. It was first organized here in the year 1992. However, due to various factors the programme was discontinued after two years. Now the present generation has re-started it with new gusto and with the mission to turn Kalimpong into a hub for Nepali literature. The episodes of Basibiyalo have now crossed its indoor barriers and have come out in open spaces like paddy fields, forest villages, and the confluence of the Tessta-Rangeet Rivers. The outdoor episodes have so far been organized in Mungpoo, Lava, Melli in Sikkim, Echhey Busty, East Main Road, etc. The 50^th and 75^th episodes were organized at Mangal Dham and Ramkrishna Rangamanch, respectively, where the literati like Mahananda Poudyal and Nar Bahadur Dahal were conferred the title of Gaon Buraa (Village Head) for their tireless contribution towards the development of Nepali literature.

This programme is gaining its height every day. Presently the programme of Basibiyalo is regularly held in Singtam, East Sikkim and similar kinds of functions are organized in Rhenok, Gangtok and other places in different names.

A considerable number of young writers have elevated from the platform of Basibiyalo. Earlier this open space of Basibiyalo was utilized by writers like Dr. Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Moti Prasad Sharma,Min Liwang, Arun Prakash Rai, to name a few. The regular attendance of reputed writers like Gyan Sutar, Samsher Ali, Munu Gautam, C. K. Shrestha, B.K. Shilal, Sashi Sunam, etc. is encouraging young and aspiring writers like Sarita Samdarshi, Sudesh Khati, Raghunath Dangal, Rabindra Shilal, Ashim Saagar, Dhan Bahadur Magar, Siba Chetri Sibu, etc.

More recently, Kalimpong has been witness to a number of book-releasing/launching functions which only goes to show the development of the town as a literary hub. Book releasing ceremonies like Charitra story special (edited by Sanjay Bishta), Biu Bhaley (short story collection by Samsher Ali), Kaalo Gulaab (ghazal collection by Arun Sampang and Suraz Subba), Darjeeling ko Saano Rail (children poems by B. K. Silal), Manpida (poems by Smt. Sanumati Rai) amply suffice to assert the fact that this little town has been trying to become a destination for Nepali literature. This growing literary popularity of the town compelled Suraj Dhadkan of Chungthung, Darjeeling to release his recently published Ghar (short story collection) here in Kalimpong.

Basibiyalo has now completed its 100^th episode in Kalimpong and this two day long event is being organized to mark the occasion which has been a milestone in the history of Nepali literature. REPORT ON TRIP TO RHENOCK, BASIBIYALO AT NAMCHI

Right from the beginning of the month September preparation work for organizing 100^th episode of Basibiyalo at grand manner started with full enthusiasm among members of all class. Everyone was engaged in executing respective works. The weekly meetings were held regularly at SD Library every Saturday where all members used to express their own ideas, view and opinion to make the program a successful one. They distributed the task among themselves. The progress report of the task assigned to the members reviewed every week. It continued till the last hour of the program. Within that period one decision was adopted to pay visit to Sikkim (the birthplace of Basibiyalo) to meet the old members. It was not only intended to involve them in proposed 100^th episode but also to re-form a concrete group of Basibiyalo there and make this platform an example for the forthcoming generation of Nepali literature.

            Thus, two groups were formed to visit Sikkim. One group went to Gangtok and drop down to Singtam and another group went to Rhenock and met them at Singtam itself. I was included in the group who went to Rhenock along with Hira Chhetri Sir, Sudesh Khati Sir, Sibu Chettri daju and Anjali bahini. It was on 23rd October, we set off for Rhenock early in the morning at 8 and reached there around 10:30 am. Mr. Ganesh Pradhan Sir had come to the taxi stand to receive us. He showed a good hospitality in his home. I don’t know about others but I really don’t knew that he had a very sweet and amazing museum and nursery as well. It is known as Rama Gauri Sangrahalaya. We really had the great opportunity to see somebody’s such a beautiful hobby. There we came to know that plants are also of carnivorous type.

            After having a look all around we took rest for a while with tea and snacks. Few minutes later 3, 4 persons also arrived there. We introduced each other and had a discussion for what purpose we had actually been there. They appreciated our thoughts and agreed to support us whole heartedly. With the end of the serious discussion we headed towards the town for lunch which was provided by them especially for us with so much love and respect. After a delicious lunch we took leave for Singtam.

              We had so much fun there. It was really a very enjoyable as well as unforgettable trip in our life.
